Group Exercise and Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is an incredibly common condition, effecting 2 million Australians. It’s described as a mismatch between the normal process of wear and repair. As we age, sometimes the repair process slows down whilst the wear continues. This can often become a difficult time where the pain starts to slow you down and impact upon your ability to do the things you love.

The good thing is that there are things we can do to help stimulate the repair process and get you back to what you love. The mainstay of treatment for osteoarthritis is physiotherapy and exercise. Strengthening the musculature around the effected joint can help take the load off and get you moving more confidently with reduced pain.

Group exercise has been shown to be more effective than exercising alone in terms of functional outcomes, time off work, and pain. It can also help with motivation and exercise adherence in a condition where consistent effort is important. These exercise programs can really make a profound difference in the lives of people with osteoarthritis. At SmartMoves, we try to adapt our group exercise classes to suit the individuals’ aches, pains, and strengths.

At present we’re gauging interest for an osteoarthritis specific group exercise class to help develop a really tailored experience. If you or someone you know are interested, then please give us a call or send us an email.
