The ‘Do Something’ Principle

The Do Something principle was first introduced to me by Mark Manson, author of the best selling book ‘The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F***’. This notion challenges the assumption that inspiration precedes action and instead reverses it! Small actions performed regularly can help to establish a habit, and even though improvements may be slow to start with, small wins enable us to gain inspiration to take further action! It can be daunting to begin a new healthy habit, but when we break it down into bite-sized chunks it becomes easier to work up the energy to perform the task and form the foundation for you to build something more substantial.

For instance:

Instead of saying “I want to run 5km a day”, start with a simple jog around the block every second day.

Instead of trying to meditate 20mins per day, start with 10 deep breaths before bed each night.

Instead of saying “I need to spend less Money on Takeout”, commit to making one home cooked meal every Sunday night.

Instead of joining a gym and trying to attend 3-4x/week, call SmartMoves and commit to one group exercise class per week!

Benefits of the “Do Something” principle:

-          Habit forming

-          Breaks the change into small, achievable goals

-          Easier to get motivated to perform smaller tasks

-          Creates a sense of achievement, an addictive feeling that provides a springboard for further change

At SmartMoves we try to apply this concept by only providing you with essential exercises that will have the maximal effect on your issue! We also provide tailored advice to ways you can slightly alter your exercise habits to move toward your desired goal.
