Bone density concerns related to menopause

Menopause is a time when a woman experiences a significant decline in estrogen levels which can lead to accelerated bone loss and an increased risk of osteoporosis or fractures.  Your physiotherapist can tailor your exercise and provide you with resistance based weight bearing exercises in order to prevent osteoporosis and even improve your bone density during this time. Specific exercises offer several important benefits for bone health during this stage:

1.     Stimulates bone remodeling: weight-bearing exericises place effective load on the bones which stimulates the bone remodeling process.

2.     Resistance exercises can increase bone mineral density such as calcium and phosphorus which will strengthen the bones.

3.     Specific exercises can also improve balance and coordination: menopausal women are at an increased risk of falls and exercise can assist in falls prevention and reduces risk of sustaining any fractures.

4.     Enhanced muscle strength: resistive exercises can build up the muscle mass which allows better support for the joints and reduces stress on them which has shown to be an effective method in managing osteoarthritis.

It is important to note that women should consult with their physiotherapist before starting an exercise program particularly if they have any existing health conditions. A physiotherapist can provide guidance on the most appropriate exercises and provide any modifications necessary.
