If you’re getting knee pain when running, jumping or walking up stairs, this technique can help. Most knee pain will require appropriate strength work but this method is useful as a pain-reliever and can be used to help you get through more strenuous activities. Make sure you monitor your skin and avoid if you have sensitive skin or reactions to adhesives in the past.

When should we GET an X-ray, MRI, CT Scan or Ultrasound? When are the findings important?

The take home points:
Imaging should be considered when it may change how we treat a condition (eg suspected fracture, tumour, clot, or unusual presentation)
Many of the findings on scans are normal and may not be the cause of pain. Studies found:
37% of people with no back pain had disc bulges
61% of people had cartilage (meniscus) tears in their knee, but no pain.
22% of the population have rotator cuff (shoulder tendon) tears but 2/3 of these do not cause pain.
Often what we see on a scan doesn’t correlate very well with the severity of someone’s pain. It is important not to get too worried about what you see on a scan because even the worst looking joint doesn’t necessarily have to be painful.

This app measures jumping height and power. Its great for late stage rehabilitation from knee and ankle injuries to determine whether you have rehabilitated to the right level. Jump height and distance are great indicators of not only performance, but your chance of re-injury.

Lateral Hop Test
Still on the subject of jumping/hopping. The 40cm lateral hop test is a great test that we use regularly in the clinic. it can be used to determine whether you are ready to return to sport, or simply as a measure of athletic performance.
Make 2 lines 40cm apart and jump on one leg from side to side, clearing the line as many times as you can in a minute. Your Goal = 43 - 55 in 1 minute at 90% accuracy!
